Cases

A case is the unit everything else hangs on. It holds the client, the people on both sides, the hearings, the files, the orders, the drafts, the messages, and the next step. When a colleague asks where a case stands, the case itself is the answer rather than a person's memory.

What it is

One record per case, holding everything that has happened on it and whose turn it is next.

It is not a to-do list bolted onto a case number, and it is not a copy of the court's record. It is your law firm's own record of its own work.

What sits on a case

Everything that has happened, and the one thing that has to happen next.

The client, and how they want to be told things.
The parties, and who appears for the other side.
Hearings: the date, court, hall, item number, and the last order.
The file: orders, petitions, letters, and notes.
Drafts waiting for someone to read and sign off.
The fee memo, raised or not raised.
The next step, and whose name is against it.

Whose turn it is

Every case carries one next step and one name. That is deliberate. A case where four people each think somebody else is handling it is the case that gets missed, and a shared list without a name on it does not fix that.

Case numbers

Where a court gives a case a number record, Tulip keys on it, which is what lets a cause list entry find the right case on its own. Forums that do not issue one, such as the regulator and the consumer commissions, are matched on the case number as that forum writes it.
